There are lots of ways to support your favorite nonprofits. Here are just a few to get you started.

1.

mark your calendar for erie gives.

The 10th annual Erie Gives will take place on Tuesday, August 11, 2020.

When you make a donation to a participating nonprofit on Erie Gives, your gift will be enhanced with funds from a prorated match pool, thanks to a number of generous sponsors, including Erie Insurance, Wabtec, The Erie Community Foundation, and Knox Law.

Visit ErieGives.org to learn more and to sign up for text reminders ahead of the big day!

2.

help get the word out.

Advocate for the organizations and causes you believe in—during Celebrate Nonprofits Week and all year long!

Talk to your friends and loved ones about the work your favorite nonprofits are doing. Write an op-ed in support of nonprofits. Share updates from organizations you care about with your social networks.

No matter the route you take, sharing your appreciation for the work our nonprofits do makes a difference.

Visit our Voice Your Support page to learn how you can boost the signal of your favorite nonprofits during Celebrate Nonprofits Week.

3.

purchase an item from an organization's wish list.

Printer paper. Manila folders. Whiteboards. Postage scales.

Unless you're a very unusual person, these everyday items probably don't bring a tear to your eye or make your heart soar. But they're the tools of the trade for our nonprofit professionals, and they're absolutely critical to these organizations' ability to carry out their deeply important work.

Consider purchasing an item from one of your favorite organizations' wish lists to help meet the need for everyday supplies.

Visit our Wish Lists page to find your favorite organization's wish list.

4.

become a sustaining member or monthly donor.

Do you know many subscriptions you're paying for right now?

If you're anything like most people, you're paying for a hefty handful of subscription services each month: $0.99 for iCloud storage, $10.59 for Spotify Premium, $13.77 for Netflix, $8.99 for the workout app you haven't opened in months... you get the picture. Clearly, you're not afraid of subscriptions. So why not support the organizations you believe in in a similar way?

Many nonprofits have monthly giving programs that allow you to set up a recurring subscription-sized monthly donation, although you can choose to contribute as much or as little as you like.

Becoming a sustaining member or monthly donor of your favorite organization is a budget-friendly way to live your values by supporting the causes you care about all year long.

5.

sign up to volunteer.

Looking for a hands-on way to give back and support a cause you're passionate about? Sign up to become a volunteer!

Create a profile for the Erie region's volunteer portal, Get Connected Erie, where organizations post volunteer needs and prospective volunteers browse and sign up for volunteering opportunities.

Prospective volunteers can sort opportunities by organization, cause area, skill set, and other criteria to find the perfect opportunity for them.

6.

stay in the know.

You can't effectively support or advocate for an organization if you don't know what they're up to!

Stay on top of what's new and what's next by signing up for your favorite nonprofit's newsletter and by following their social media channels.

To make sure the algorithm isn't getting in the way of you and your updates, be sure to mark newsletter emails as important in Gmail and tell Facebook to prioritize an organization's posts in your News Feed.

7.

host a facebook fundraiser.

Facebook fundraisers: they're not just for birthdays!

Beyond your birthday, you have 364 opportunities to help give back to the organizations you believe in with a Facebook fundraiser. And with just a little bit of elbow grease, you can make a big impact.

Check out these tips for creating a successful Facebook fundraiser!

8.

show your appreciation for nonprofit staff.

Did a member of a volunteer fire department share some words of wisdom with you in a scary moment? Does your child always look forward to seeing that one staff member at the nature center?

Let them know how much you appreciate them with a call, an email, or a note expressing your thanks.

You can even choose to include a token of your appreciation, if you feel so inclined. One option is to send a meal through Red Letter Hospitality's Meals for Heroes program.

9.

support businesses that support nonprofits.

Given the opportunity, choose to spend your hard-earned dollars at businesses that have committed to donating a portion of their proceeds to nonprofit organizations.

Examples of nonprofit-oriented initiatives at Erie-area businesses include Country Fair's Pump for Charity and the Auto Express Resale Center's weekly Loving Giving Local giveaway.
